Spread Your Wings Adventure Race Weekend

Team CACAR in the form of Kirk and Paul will be participating the in the 24 hour version of the 2010 Spread Your Wings Adventure Race near Rocksprings, TX at Camp Eagle (AKA middle of nowhere).  Lori will be joining us on the trip (and maybe a trekking leg or 2) and also serving as our support crew.  Pending any kind of cell coverage, I may be able to convince her to post some blog updates during the race.  The race is part of the Checkpoint Tracker Series and the race directors will be using CoverItLive.com to provide updates during the race.  Here's what they said:

"Checkpoint Tracker: The 24 hour Adventure course as well as the 12 hour Sport Course is proud to be part of the new Checkpoint Tracker Series. You must register your team prior to the start of the race to receive points. SYW will have updates on Coveritlive. We will try to update racer/team status every couple of hours. Tell your family and friends to tune into the Checkpoint Tracker site every so often for news of their favorite teams."

In summary, here is your potential race update sources on Saturday starting at 8am:

Collarbones and Crawfish

On Saturday we had a full day planned.  Matt, Paul, and I were going to get 4 - 5 hours of paddling, mountain biking, and running in at the Spillway followed by a crawfish boil.  Lori was planning on getting in her first trail run/trek since breaking her collarbone 7 weeks earlier.  We paddled to the end of the suction and back (around 6 miles) in about 1:15.  We then transitioned to the bikes.  We then headed into the trail and a few minutets later I hear the sounds of a crash.  Rounding the corner revealed Matt sprawled out on the ground obviously in pain.  I immediately had flashbacks to Lori's spill and I'm sure Paul did as well.  Matt managed to get to his feet.  We asked the usual questions like where does it hurt and how's your head.  His shoulder was main source of pain.  He was able to move his arm and shoulder pretty well  which we thought was a good sign.  He looked pretty dazed though and asked to sit down.  He proceeded to lay down in a blackberry bush (he didn't notice though).  He sat back up and compared the feel of each collarbone with both hands which convinced him that something wasn't right.  I was convinced when I realized that he was feeling his right collarbone in a completely different location than his left one.  Not good!  We started walking back down the trail toward the parking area and came across Lori just getting into her run.  She thought we were pulling a very bad joke on her, but assured her we weren't.  We all 4 made it back to the vehicles and Lori drove Matt to the Urgent Care facility in LaPlace.  The x-rays confirmed what we all feared/knew that Matt had broken his collarbone.  The doctor put him in a sling and told him to go see a specialist on Monday.  We then headed back to the Spillway to commence with the crawfish boil plans.

My dad and I boiled 2 sacks of crawfish for the cew consisiting of me, Lori, my parents, Matt, Matt's mom and sister, some of Matt's friends from New Orleans, the Pourciaus, Jamie, Paul, and Paul's wife and son (did I miss anyone?).  The crawfish turned out pretty good and the company was even better.  Despite Matt's rough start to the day, I think he had a good time while trying to disguise his pain and discomfort (yeah we could tell).  Here's some pictures Scarlett provided (Thanks).

Mmmmm!

Open you mouth when you smile, it looks like your having fun...

...but you still have to smile or it looks kind of creepy.

Stella noticed the size of my post crawfish stomach and offered me a Diet Coke
